What is vision therapy?
Vision therapy is a personalised program of exercises and activities aimed at improving and enhancing visual skills and abilities. It is particularly beneficial for individuals who may have difficulties with eye coordination, focusing, tracking, or other visual functions. Through a combination of specialised techniques and equipment, vision therapy aims to strengthen the connection between the eyes and the brain, resulting in improved visual performance and comfort.

My journey began with a Bachelor of Optometry degree from the University of Johannesburg in 2011. Since then, I’ve continuously honed my skills through annual Continuing Professional Development with the Graduate Institute of Optometry. I became an associate of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development in 2016, and I’m currently a member of the Graduate Institute of Optometry and the South African Optometric Association. I’m also a proud participant in the fellowship program offered by the College of Optometrists in Vision Development in the USA.
Who Can Benefit from Vision Therapy?
Vision therapy can benefit individuals with various visual challenges, including but not limited to:
- Eye coordination disorders
- Amblyopia (lazy eye)
- Strabismus (crossed eyes)
- Convergence insufficiency
- Accommodative disorders
- Visual processing disorders
- Reading and learning difficulties
- Computer vision syndrome
Vision therapy works by employing a series of specialised exercises, activities, and techniques to improve and enhance various visual skills and abilities. These skills include eye coordination, focusing, tracking, visual processing, and more. The therapy is designed to strengthen the connection between the eyes and the brain, ultimately leading to improved visual performance and comfort. During vision therapy sessions, patients engage in a variety of activities that are tailored to their specific visual needs and goals. These activities may include:
- Eye exercises: These exercises are designed to improve eye muscle strength, flexibility, and coordination. Patients may be tasked with performing tasks such as following moving objects with their eyes, focusing on near and distant objects, and performing eye movements in different directions.
- Visual tracking activities: These activities aim to enhance the ability to smoothly and accurately track moving objects with the eyes. Patients may track objects along specific patterns or trajectories, such as figure-eight patterns or zig-zag paths.
- Binocular vision exercises: Binocular vision refers to the ability of both eyes to work together as a team. Therapy may include exercises to improve binocular vision skills, such as convergence (bringing the eyes together to focus on near objects) and divergence (moving the eyes apart to focus on distant objects).
- Visual processing tasks: These tasks focus on improving the brain’s ability to interpret and process visual information efficiently. Patients may engage in activities such as visual memory games, visual discrimination tasks, and visual-motor integration exercises.
- Therapeutic lenses and prisms: In some cases, specialised lenses or prisms may be used during therapy sessions to help correct specific visual problems and facilitate visual development.
Throughout the course of vision therapy, patients typically work closely with Werner who monitors their progress and adjusts the therapy program as needed. The frequency and duration of therapy sessions vary depending on the individual’s needs and goals, but consistency and compliance with the prescribed exercises are key to achieving optimal results. Overall, vision therapy is a personalised and results-driven approach to improving visual function and comfort for individuals of all ages with a wide range of visual challenges
